Joseph Locke Primary School closed on June 18, after the head teacher sought advice from Public Health England.

Barnsley Council say staff and the headteacher at the school have 'worked closely' with Public Health England to incorporate 'aditional measures' to make sure the school is safe to welcome back pupils.

"Places were offered first to pupils who were attending prior to closure.

"Priority for places remained for vulnerable pupils, children of key workers and eligible cohorts (nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 6)

"Letters were sent to parents and carers to keep them informed about the additional measures in place and what their children could expect upon their return.

"We acknowledge that closing the school due to Coronavirus (COVID-19) may have had an impact on children’s emotional health and wellbeing and we are confident that that the children have been welcomed back with reassurance."

Councillor Margaret Bruff, cabinet spokesperson for children’s services, said: “The safety of children and staff is our priority and my thanks go to the team at Joseph Locke Primary who have been working hard to welcome pupils and staff back to a safe school environment.

“We know that this is a worrying time and emotions are high. We urge parents and carers to follow the advice given to them by official sources such as the school, the council, and Public Health England.

“It’s so important people are being vigilant and more careful than ever about observing the now-familiar measures such as handwashing, social distancing, staying at home and self-isolating if symptomatic. These will all help to reduce the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) in the community.
