Coronavirus: Barnsley Council chief executive says authority is "well placed" to deal with impact of virus

Barnsley Council's chief executive has reassured residents they are "well prepared" to deal with the impact of coronavirus.

Sarah Norman, chief executive, addressed residents via a video with updates on how they are tackling the disease that has already killed more than 100 people in the UK at the time of writing.

She said: "This is a really difficult time for everybody and we understand how worried you must be.

“Over the last two weeks the council has already been reviewing its business continuity plans so we are well prepared to deal with what we face.

“We are reviewing services and doing everything we can to keep everything operating as normal but we will need to make some changes as the time comes and we will be keeping things under review.

“If you’re feeling unwell it’s really important you follow NHS advice and look at the NHS 111 website in order to know what you should do.

“We have already had to cancel a few events and those will be advertised on our website.

“Do look after yourselves and your loved ones, think about your neighbours and the people who may need help who are perhaps having to self-isolate and need you to come to their aid in terms of shopping etc.

“We will let you know as things develop, thank you.”

Across the country, councils have cancelled public meetings and events and encouraged staff to operate from home to avoid spreading the virus.

The government are set to announce new legislation to clarify how local authorities will operate during the crisis.
