Councillor Peter Price, member of the committee, said: “I support the officer’s recommendation.

“I don’t agree that this will be noisy, it’s a public park with kids kicking balls about, shouting and screaming all through the day.

“I think it will be a good addition to this park and the vast majority of users will enjoy it to pop in for a drink or something to eat in those nice surroundings.

“We need to help pubs as much as we can to survive in this current climate and I think this is a brave addition the pub is going for, to help it I guess in its future.

“Together I think the park and pub make a nice combination.”

Councillor Andrew Sangar added: “Millhouses Park is a destination park for the whole of the city, I know over the years the Friends of Millhouses Park have done a huge amount of work in terms of making the park more inclusive and that has been really to the benefit of everybody.

“It is also very challenging when we are making any planning decision to change part of a park but on balance I am going with the officer’s recommendation.

“I think this is a positive enhancement to the amount of space people at the Waggon and Horses can use and I think that will be a real benefit to the community.”

Ahead of the meeting, 100 representations were submitted by members of the public.

A total of 56 were objections which included concerns about the reduction in open space and harm to the general character of the area and increase in anti-social behaviour.

There were also 45 comments in support including hopes it will enhance the park.
