Coun Joe Otten is one of around 100 volunteers at Dore Surgery Centre, which covers six GP practices and is distributing vaccines.

Volunteers were asked to take cardboard boxes, from medical supplies, to the local tip but Coun Otten says Sheffield Council should be collecting them.

“The vaccine hub had to ask volunteers to take away cardboard recycling because of the volume of supplies they are getting.

“This is non domestic waste and people really shouldn’t be asked to remove it, especially as they could be turned away from dump-it sites.

“It’s a marvellous operation with the vaccines but it’s very tightly traffic managed and then you’re asking people to turn up with cars so they can load them up with cardboard. This isn’t the right way to do waste collection.”

Sheffield Council said waste management officers were aware and were working with the surgery management team to resolve the matter.

A council spokeman said: “We are currently in the process of arranging a paper and card waste collection service for those Covid vaccination centres in Sheffield that have requested support which is hoped to be in place by the end of the week.”
