The Dorothy Pax, on Wharf Street, Victoria Quays, next to the canal, submitted an application to vary its licence to allow external events on eight days of the year and the sale of alcohol at events on 12 days of the year. It also applied to allow serving from the outside bar so drinkers could enjoy a tipple by the canal in the summer months.

It was granted the change in a Sheffield Council licensing sub-committee meeting.

Patrick Robson, solicitor for the applicant, said it follows successful temporary event notices at The Dorothy Pax and the internal premises and its hours are not changing.

He added: “It’s clearly very unprecedented and worrying times for the licensing industry with multiple local lockdowns placed on premises and social distancing meaning you can’t have full capacity. So anecdotally, there are lots of applications out there to get various outside seating as well.”

There was an objection to the application from Fernie Greaves Ltd, that manage the building, over concerns about health and safety and noise.

Before summaries were given, Andy Bainbridge, chair of the committee, said to the applicant’s team: “You offered a very robust presentation and covered a lot of areas that perhaps you weren’t expected to, which is very encouraging.”
