Café plans at Barnsley's Cannon Hall deferred again

The historic house and surrounding parkland are Barnsley’s premier museum and it is in the process of a major upgrade which could see visitor numbers rise from 400,000 a year to 500,000.

As part of developments, the museums service which runs the venue wants to convert what is currently a disused stable into an upmarket cafe with table service as well as a new shop.

When the application was first considered by councillors, the requested a site visit ahead of making a decision.

Now that has taken place, councillors had asked to see the results of noise and vibration surveys before making a final decision.

Neighbour Anita Nixon, who lives in a property adjoining the Spencer wing where the development would take place, attended a meeting of the planning board to complain about both issues.

She said noise from events which currently took place in the building could be heard from her home and at times the floorboards had ‘bounced’ because of vibrations transferred through a party wall.

There were also concerns raised about the use of an private drive, which Barnsley Council has access rights over, but board members were told that was a civil issue and therefore could not be considered as part of the planning process.
