“It’s still a bit of a scary time because of the coronavirus pandemic. But we’ve got to move forward as positively as possible.

“I’m there to represent indoor and outdoor traders and I’ll work hard to represent their views to the council as we move forward.

“I’d like to say a big thank you to all our customers for supporting us. We need your support now more than ever and we can’t wait to see you all back in the market.”

National President Michael Nicholson, who officiated at the EGM, said: “We are sure these elections bode well for the future with the promise of a better relationship with Barnsley Council and the market management, a relationship which goes back as far as the NMTF’s foundation in 1899.

“We will always support the NMTF Barnsley Group in ensuring it does its utmost to represent the best interests of both indoor and outdoor traders on this renowned market.”

Councillor Tim Cheetham, Barnsley Council’s cabinet spokesperson for Regeneration and Culture, said Sue's appointment marks a turning point for the relationship between traders and the council.

“It’s no secret that since the indoor market’s move into The Glass Works, the relationship between the council and the local group hasn’t been as productive as we would have liked.

"However, Sue’s appointment marks a turning point in our relationship, and we’re committed to working with her and our indoor and outdoor traders to make Barnsley Market a success as we recover from the impact of COVID-19.

“Sue’s appointment, along with the recommendations from the recent market review and the creation of a tenant steering group will help us move forward stronger together.

“As always, I’d like to encourage people to support our fantastic traders and shop local at our brilliant market. There really is something for everyone.”
