Due to the current social distancing guidelines, Barnsley Council meetings at the Town Hall are cancelled and local elections have been postponed until 2021.

This means Coun Pauline Markham, the mayor, will be kept in the same post until around October.

Coun Caroline Makinson, deputy mayor, had been due to take on the role at the annual council meeting this week.

Coun Jim Andrews, council deputy leader, said: “Coun Makinson was elected deputy mayor in May 2019.

“This post is usually held for a year, after which the deputy becomes mayor at the following annual council meeting and a new deputy is elected.

“Given the current situation, the annual council meeting has been postponed. This means Coun Markham remains mayor and is due to hand over to Coun Makinson when we are able to hold annual council, hopefully in October.”
