Further job losses are expected following the Government’s decision to tighten the rules around day-to-day life following a rise in Covid-19 infections across the UK.

The new measures are expected to replace the furlough scheme, which is set to expire next month. One in three workers in Sheffield was furloughed at the start of lockdown, while nationally, 11 per cent of the UK’s workforce remained on furlough in mid-August.

Pubs and restaurants have warned they will be hit hard by new restrictions, which require them to close at 10pm. Sports clubs have also warned the new rules will sound the death knell for many of them unless they receive financial help.
