Coronavirus: First to stop its school bus services in Sheffield from Monday

There will not be any dedicated school buses running in Sheffield from Monday after the government announced mass school closures.

Only vulnerable children and those with parents who are key workers will still be allowed to attend school but First bus company says it will not be operating any commercial dedicated schools services after today.

Paul Hopkinson, schools liaison manager at First, said in an email to parents: "From Monday we will be operating what is essentially a Saturday service with a few enhancements in the early mornings.

"Please keep a watch on our website for further announcements. Thank you for your understanding and continued support. We will keep you updated on further developments."

There is also question mark over whether school dinners will continue to be provided or if children will need a packed lunch.

The government says pupils eligible for free meals should continue to have them even though schools have closed.

Its advice to headteachers is: "If your school is closed and your catering team cannot provide meals or food parcels, you should offer families of pupils eligible for free school meals an alternative.

"You can order supermarket and shop vouchers directly from a number of retailers. We recommend sourcing vouchers for supermarkets or shops in the local area. Where possible they should be restricted for use against age-related products.

"We understand that some of these approaches may mean that schools and other educational establishments go to additional expense. We will provide further guidance shortly on how we will compensate."
