Complaints against South Yorkshire Police up 40 per cent

The number of complaints against South Yorkshire Police are up 40 per cent in the last year, a report has revealed.

In a report to Dr Alan Billings South Yorkshire's Police and Crime Commissioner, it was disclosed that in 2020, 881 complaints were received by the force, Ibut in the last most recent quarter (Q3 2020/21), there were 625 complaint allegations, which the report says "represents a steady increase over the last 12 months."

Of the complaints made in October to December 2020, 316 were based on the force's delivery of duty and service, 160 were about police powers, policies and procedures, and 27 were about discriminatory behaviours.

An annual grievance report into the 13 formal grievances last year made four recommendations: greater learning opportunities in supporting disability in the workplace; review the purpose and use of First Contacts; relaunching regular information events for those who volunteer to help resolve grievances; and revising how grievance records are kept.

The report adds: "In the last most recent quarter (Q3 2020/21), there were 625 complaint allegations (more than one allegation can be made in a complaint) which represents a steady increase over the last 12 months.

"The volume of allegations about delivery of duties and service increased to 316. This is the most prevalent allegation made."
