Many people have fallen on the old slippery floor of the playground in Abbeyfield Park, Pitsmoor.

Concern about the hazard was raised with the council numerous times by residents over the years and yesterday morning it was finally resurfaced.

Local mum Danielle Fortier launched a petition earlier this month calling for the action, which gathered nearly 300 signatures.

More than a dozen people commented on the petition and some shared experiences of falling over.

Shirley Northcott, one of 270 people who signed, said: “I’m signing because I’m one of the people who have slipped. I’m a grandmother and any broken bones I experience won’t heal as quickly as they would if I were younger.”

Vicki Bennetts, who also signed, commented: “Our grandson broke his arm several years ago falling from quite a low height.”

Emilie Taylor added: “My children play here, as do many local children. They have fallen and hurt themselves and in trying to help I have fallen too. I have watched elderly grandparents slip and fall when trying to help children.”

Ben Marshall said: “The playground is such a vital part of this community. A lifeline for parents and carers. But it’s impossible to actually enjoy whilst it’s unsafe. The difference it would make to countless families here cannot be overstated.”

Those who campaigned are holding a celebratory picnic in the park on September 4th from 12 noon.
