Bishop of Sheffield accuses Prime Minister of 'undermining trust of the electorate'

The Bishop of Sheffield says the Prime Minister and his cabinet are ‘undermining the trust of the electorate’ with their response to the Dominic Cummings scandal.

Dr Pete Wilcox claimed the ‘risks to life are real’ over the way they have handled the situation.

Boris Johnson’s aide travelled to County Durham in March to self-isolate with his family, despite his wife having coronavirus symptoms and official guidelines advising against long distance journeys. Further reports suggest he made a second trip to the north east in April, which he denies.

Mr Johnson has defended Mr Cummings, claiming ‘any parent would frankly understand what he did’.

But many politicians, including some Tory MPs, have called for him to go.

Dr Wilcox said: “I don’t usually tweet politics, and I have carefully steered clear during the pandemic. But tonight I must say: the PM & his cabinet are undermining the trust of the electorate and the risks to life are real.”
