Barnsley MP calls for more PPE for frontline workers

A Barnsley MP has criticised the government for failing to respond to offers for help to purchase personal protective equipment.

Stephanie Peacock, Barnsley East MP, spoke in parliament to raise the offer made by the British Chambers of Commerce to help co-ordinate PPE and get it to the frontline.

She asked Michael Gove, Cabinet Office minister, why the government had failed to respond offers for help to purchase PPE.

Her question followed a call with Jo Churchill, parliamentary under-secretary for health, where she pressed for a regional breakdown of PPE supplies and asked the government to outline its plan to deliver essential PPE to care workers and care homes.

Miss Peacock said: “PPE saves lives. It is urgent that doctors, nurses and healthcare workers on the frontlines are protected.

“I will support every measure to ensure NHS staff and care workers have the tools they need to prevent the spread of coronavirus and protect their health.”
