All planned road resurfacing works in Sheffield are now suspended

It follows concerns from construction workers about still leaving home to carry out non essential jobs despite government putting a ban on this - but the council and its contractors said they were doing "absolutely everything" they can to keep staff safe.

As part of a £2.2 billion highway maintanence contract between Amey and Sheffield Council, all roads are supposed to be resurfaced over a 25 year period.

They have now decided to delay these works because of the coronavirus outbreak.

In a statement, Sheffield Council said: "Currently, Amey is focusing on maintaining an essential service and prioritising emergency and safety critical jobs. These include works such as lining on newly surfaced road junctions to prevent road traffic accidents, maintaining traffic signals and visibility at road junctions, emergency tree works and gritting our roads during colder weather. This work is essential to keep our network in good condition so that key workers and those who still need to travel, can do so safely.

"However, the situation is evolving daily and changes are inevitable.

"As of today, all our programmed resurfacing work has been suspended until further notice and roadside signs informing of this work are being removed. Emergency surfacing jobs will still go ahead. If you have received a letter from Streets Ahead informing you of work to be carried out, that work will now be cancelled."
