Recent memory appears to be filled with headlines regarding policies and plans enacted by Sheffield City Council that have proven unsuccessful or unpopular. From the recently removed Container Park on Fargate to the opinion-dividing Clean Air Zone, it would appear controversy is never far away in local politics, especially considering both of those examples have occured since the start of this year.
Here are nine of Sheffield City Council’s most controversial moves ever.
9. Active Neighbourhoods
Another recent policy enacted by Sheffield City Council, the Active Neighbourhoods, rolled out in areas like Crookes and Nether Edge, proved particularly unpopular with some residents in those communities. Ultimately, the scheme was scaled back following "feedback" from the public. Photo: .
10. Clean Air Zone
The Sheffield Clean Air Zone came into force on February 27, 2023 despite protests from local businesses who suggested it could shut them down. The zone charges either £10 per day or £50 per day depending on the type of vehicle being used, including LGVs, HGVs, some taxis and buses. The Clean Air Zone boundary currently includes the ring road, which was designed to enable vehicles to navigate around Sheffield City Centre. Photo: .
