Voters will be able to mark an X at some unusual venues after Sheffield Council scrambled to find new stations for the snap election.

Weston Park Museum, Sheffield Archives, the Walkley Cottage pub, Zest leisure centre at Upperthorpe and three churches are now included in 246 stations citywide.

Andrew Cain, electoral services manager, said the council had to book all the stations in about a week.

“We’d like to thank all of the organisations for their help at such short notice, particularly those that offered up accommodation for new stations.

“Due to the election being called at short notice we had a larger number of polling stations unavailable than usual.

“We haven’t replaced any polling stations that were unsuitable although we do think some of the new stations may offer an improvement. If this is the case, we will look to use these in future as well.”

The venues will still be open to the public as normal, with areas set aside for polling booths, but you can only vote at your allocated station.

Mr Cain said the council looks at many factors when choosing new stations. “We consider the location, whether it’s reasonably accessible and avoids, as far as possible, barriers for voters such as steep hills, major roads and rivers.

“We look at convenient transport links and if the building is accessible to everyone,” he added.
