Police ‘can’t afford’ more protests in Rotherham, a leading officer has said.

Chief Superintendent Jason Harwin, South Yorkshire Police’s Rotherham district commander, says the force will meet with key far-right protest groups to try to stop future demonstrations from hitting businesses.

He said: “I do feel that for businesses, it’s coming to a level now where some would have to finish in Rotherham.

“The issue for us is we can’t afford to keep having the protests.

“We’ve to do everything we can to give everyone their democratic right, but ensure that when they do take place, we minimise the community impact.”
