A police search team is to begin a dig on the island of Kos today after a tip-off that missing Ben Needham from Sheffield may have been buried.

Ben was 21 months old when he vanished from outside a farmhouse his grandfather was renovating on the Greek isle in July 1991.

Detectives investigating the disappearance have told his mum, Kerry Needham, to 'prepare for the worst'.

They are following up a claim that Ben may have been crushed to death by a digger being used to clear a building plot close to where Ben was last seen playing.

Konstantinos Barkas, known as Dino, who died last year, has been accused by a friend of possibly burying the youngster in an accident.

Material from the building plot he was clearing was moved to two sites on the island, which are to be searched from today.

Ben's mum said the possibility her son was dead never entered her 'worst nightmares' until the tip-off to police this year.

She told The Daily Mirror "Not even in my worst nightmares has Ben ever been dead ... until now. I've been waking up and finding my pillow wet with tears.

"This witness told police we deserve the truth - but we deserved the truth 25 years ago. I feel like he's only come forward because Dino is now dead.

"How can you hold on to such a secret as serious as that and for all those years?"

She added she was 'angry' when police told her about the tip-off and she now lives in fear that each day will bring the 'worst news possible'.
