Police step up patrols at Sheffield park after teens ignore social distancing

Police have stepped up patrols at a Sheffield park after reports of anti-social behaviour and groups of teenagers ignoring social distancing.

South Yorkshire Police said it was aware of problems in Bingham Park at Ecclesall and that resources were now being directed at dealing with issues in the area.

It comes after local resident Alana Clarke raised concerns after spotting groups of teenagers gathering in the park and ignoring social distancing rules.

She said: “At a time when parents are said to be concerned about their children's return to school and effective social distancing, perhaps they need to be aware what is going on?

“I observe poor behaviour almost every week.

“These lads were supposed to be “playing football” bu I have never seen a game played so close!

“This is not taking place in some "run down area" but in S11, Bingham Park. The park has a good deal of drug activity that I have witnessed over the past 2-3 years whilst walking a dog. There are numerous “dens”.

“I have experience of working with young people and drug users, professionally, so know what to look for.

“I have made reports to the police. It is a frustrating experience and little seems to happen as a result.”

A police spokesman said: “We are aware of concerns form the local community of anti-social behaviour in the Bingham Park area.

“We appreciate the impact this type of crime can have, and we’d like to reassure the public that we have increased our patrols in this area to tackle this issue.

“We’d urge any local residents who have concerns to speak to their neighbourhood team, call 101 or report online via the SYP website so we can build an accurate understanding of what’s happening and provide the appropriate response.

“We’d also ask residents to register for SYP Alerts at www.sypalerts.co.uk – a free community messaging service that allows you to communicate directly with your local officers.
