A house was broken into in Birley Moor Road, Frecheville, after a burglar got in through an upstairs rear window.

South Yorkshire said money was stolen in the raid.

A force spokesman said: "Please do not keep large amounts of cash in your property as it is much safer in a bank.

"If you have any elderly family or friends please encourage them not to keep cash in the house."

Police officers are also urging people to save receipts for jewellery and to take photographs of each item in case an insurance claim needs to be made after a burglary.

"Please save receipts for any jewellery you own and take photographs of it so that if you do need to claim on your insurance it will be much simpler to clarify values," the police spokesman added.

Officers are also investigating a burglary in Cowley Gardens, Westfield, after a window was smashed to gain entry.

A television was among the items stolen.

Anyone with information should call South Yorkshire Police on 101.
