South Yorkshire Police Authority is seeking volunteers to become Independent Custody Visitors to check on the welfare of people being held in police cells.

Volunteers visit, observe, comment and report on the rights, health and welfare of people in custody, as well as the conditions of the detention facilities. ICVs work in pairs and attend police stations unannounced. Training is provided and expenses paid.

The authority is hosting a number of informal drop in sessions so potential volunteers can find out more. There are two this Saturday from 10am to noon - one at South Yorkshire Police community safety building, Nunnery Square, Sheffield and the other at Doncaster Central Library, Waterdale, Doncaster.

A further session takes place next Saturday, April 16 from 10am to noon at South Yorkshire Joint Secretariat headquarters, Regent Street, Barnsley. The closing date for applications is May 6 at 4pm.
