Police reveal this simple vehicle check could have prevented horror Barnsley crash

Officers were called to Royston, Barnsley, yesterday afternoon after a driver lost control and hit a car in the oncoming lane. 

A 35-year-old woman, travelling with the driver, suffered serious leg injuries in the crash and was airlifted to hospital. 

Upon inspecting the vehicle, police found that the driver’s tyres had a 1mm tread depth. 

He was reported for driving without due care and attention and for having a tyre with less than 1.6mm of tread.

Police said that the driver may have been able to avoid the accident if his car was in a better condition. 

The force said: “The driver of the car, in which she was travelling lost control of the car on a bend and was hit by a car in the oncoming lane.

“Officers found that one of his tyres had 1mm tread depth. He was reported for driving without due care and attention and for having a tyre with less than 1.6mm of tread.

“The driver may have been able to avoid the accident if his car was in a better condition. Please keep an eye on the condition of your car and if it isn't safe, get it sorted or don't drive.

“Thank you to the local community for your patience and especially to the site manager of the local building site who assisted us in moving the vehicles so that the road can be opened.”
