Police respond to rumours nine Sheffield Wednesday fans in crash near Brighton

Police in Brighton have responded to rumours that a group of nine travelling Sheffield Wednesday fans were involved in a crash near the ground before tonight's football match.

Rumours have been rife on social media tonight that the fans, travelling from Sheffield for the away fixture at Brighton & Hove Albion, had been involved in a fatal smash on the A27.

The rumours began after an incident on the A27, near the Brighton ground, caused kick-off to be delayed by 15 minutes.

But PC Darren Balkham, of Sussex Police, said on Twitter: “Hearing some rumours regarding the accidents on the A27 earlier around the stadium. To confirm any injuries were minor, walking wounded.”

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police told The Star tonight: “We have no reports whatsoever”, regarding the rumours.
