Police release man quizzed in child sexual exploitation probe in Rotherham

The first suspect arrested as part of a multi-million pound probe into child sexual exploitation in Rotherham has been released on bail.

The man, who was arrested yesterday morning on suspicion of rape, two offences of supplying class A and B substances and physical assault, was quizzed by the National Crime Agency.

He has to report again in five months.

The offences all relate to one girl aged under the age of 16.

The NCA launched Operation Stovewood - an investigation into child sexual exploitation in Rotherham between 1997 and 2013 - after South Yorkshire Police was heavily criticised in a report which revealed around 1,400 children had been abused by men of largely Pakistani heritage while those in authority failed to act.

NCA officers are investigating historic abuse cases and is following up over 10,000 lines of enquiry, with 29 key suspects and hundreds of others also under investigation.

There are now eight ‘specific major investigations’ under way involving 82 victims.
