An investigation is underway into an attack on a woman close to Barnsley town centre.

The 26-year-old was walking along Pontefract Road towards Cundy Cross when she was approached from behind by a man who assaulted her.

She suffered minor injuries to her face during the incident at 1.25am on Sunday, August 7.

Her attacker was white, about 5ft 6ins tall, slim and had short, cropped, fair hair.

He is believed to have been wearing light coloured jeans and a red T-shirt.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "Officers investigating the incident want to hear from you if you saw or heard anything suspicious in the area at around that time.

"They are also keen to speak to a couple who they believe the woman and the man walked past, close to The Mount pub in Pontefract Road.

Witnesses or anyone with information should call South Yorkshire Police on 101.
