POLICE investigating the death of a man knocked down and killed by a bus are working their way through a list of witnesses.

The 52-year-old man - named by locals as Steve Wood - died after being struck by a single-decker Stagecoach bus on Bracken Moor Lane, Stocksbridge.

Officers spoke to the bus driver - a 24-year-old from Sheffield - at the scene and are in the process of making contact with all the passengers on board.

Local residents told The Star they had heard Mr Wood had been goaded by youths into playing ‘chicken’ with the bus as it approached.

An inquest into the death, at 6.20pm on Saturday, is due to be opened later this week.
