POLICE are investigating after a woman reportedly hit and verbally abused a five-year-old girl at a South Yorkshire railway station.

British Transport Police detectives have launched an appeal for witnesses after the incident at Rotherham Central station was reported.

Officers were alerted by railway staff, who had been contacted by concerned passers-by.

Detective Constable Andy Lehman, of British Transport Police’s Criminal Investigation Department, said: “The person responsible launched an aggressive torrent of abuse on a defenceless child who was unable to help herself.

“This was a cowardly attack and I would appeal for anyone who was at the station at the time to come forward and help police with their inquiries urgently.”

A 24-year-old woman from Mexborough was arrested in connection with the incident, and she has since been released on bail pending further inquiries.
