Police praise for special constables in Sheffield

Inspector Jason Booth, who leads the South East Local Policing Team, has praised the work of the specials describing their and commitment as ‘exceptional’.

There are 28 specials who work alongside the team of regular officers that polices Beighton, Birley, Mosborough, Richmond and Woodhouse.

“Our specials are doing an excellent job,” said Insp Booth.

“Over the last 12 months they have managed events, attended parades and supported us in our work to tackle anti-social behaviour.

“By supporting the local policing team, they have freed up a lot of police officers’ time and helped us to keep a visible presence in the community.

“The specials give up their time and many of them have full time jobs which just shows how dedicated they are.

“Over the last 12 months they have gone from strength to strength.”

Insp Booth added that specials had undergone computer system training, allowing them to carry out police work in the community using laptops, known as Tough Books, rather than having to return to a station.

“The whole point of the Tough Books is to allow officers more and more time to be out and about,” he added.

“It’s great that our specials have now had the same training and are working in partnership with officers.

“We want to engage with members of the community so please do come and talk to us if you see us.

“We will continue to do everything we can to keep you safe, reduce disorder and anti-social behaviour and protect vulnerable people of all ages.”
