Police officers rally to help colleagues caught up in axe attack in Sheffield

Police officers from across South Yorkshire have rallied to help colleagues affected by the axe attack in Sheffield this week.

They offered to work extra shifts yesterday and again tonight to allow officers on duty when a man armed with an axe attacked them and colleagues some time off.

The incident happened at a flat in Plowright Close, Gleadless Valley and at the Co-op in nearby Blackstock Road.

Chief Superintendent David Hartley, Sheffield’s District Commander, said: “When we looked at the team that worked they should have been on nights last night and tonight. We put a request out to let them do evidence, have some respite, get together as a team and put some support in place.

“We have been overwhelmed by the response - the number of officers that have come in and allowed that team to take breath.

“It makes me very proud of South Yorkshire Police.

Nathan Sumner, aged 35, of Plowright Close, has been charged with attempted murder, six counts of assault by beating, a section 47 assault,two counts of making threats to kill, affray, threatening a person with a blade in a public place and production of cannabis.
