Police officers hurt in patrol car crash

TWO Doncaster police officers were taken to hospital today after a spectacular crash as they rushed to an emergency.

Warmsworth Road near St Peter's Church - The White Church - at Balby was closed for almost three hours while other police officers investigated the incident, which happened just after 2.15am.

The Ford Focus patrol car ended up on its roof after flipping over the central reservation of the dual carriageway near the junction with Wallace Road.

Both constables, stationed at Edlington, needed treatment at Doncaster Royal Infirmary for minor injuries. No other vehicles were involved.

The Focus was responding to a call for help in Doncaster town centre, and was heading east along Warmsworth Road when the driver, a 24-year-old female officer, lost control on a sweeping left hand bend.

South Yorkshire Police say the car spun 180 degrees, mounted the central reservation, and collided with a lamppost before coming to rest on its roof on the opposite carriageway.

Fire crews and paramedics were called to the scene and the officers were taken to hospital.

The passenger, a 22-year-old male officer, suffered a cut arm and shoulder injury while the driver sustained minor injuries.

Both carriageways of Warmsworth Road were closed until just before 5am as road policing group officers carried out an investigation. Wet road conditions at the time of the incident may have contributed to the crash, and police said other emergency service vehicles experienced road-holding problems while driving at speed last night.

South Yorkshire Police have appealed for anyone who saw the collision to contact the witness helpline on 0114 220 2970.
