DETECTIVES investigating a hit-and-run collision which left a South Yorkshire man dead are re-appealing for help in tracing the vehicle involved.

Peter Topping, aged 56, of Cooperative Street, Goldthorpe, died after a car ran over him as he lay in the road close to his home.

Police do not know why he was in the road, but neighbours said they believe he may have been out celebrating his birthday.

Mr Topping, who lived alone with his pet dog, was struck at 8.25pm on Thursday December 29.

The car is thought to have then turned right onto Doncaster Road.

Officers want witnesses to come forward if they saw Mr Topping lying in the road or saw the impact.

Police also want to hear from anyone who has noticed the absence of a locally owned or parked car or if a car has recently been abandoned.

Flowers left outside Mr Topping’s home include a bunch from his grandson Luke, a message which said: “I love you all the world.”

n Witnesses should call police on 101.
