Police have named the Barnsley teenager killed in a car crash in the early hours of this morning.

Josh Powell, 18, from Grimethorpe died after the silver Peugeot 306 convertible he was travelling in hit a street lamp and continued along the footpath through a garden and into the front of a house of Engine Lane, Shafton.

A 25-year-old man, also of Grimethorpe, sustained critical injuries in the incident, which happened at around 3.15am, and remains in hospital.

It is believed the control of the car was lost around a slight left-hand bend. South Yorkshire Police said officers believe the car was travelling above the speed limit and it is not yet known who was driving.

The owner of the house on Engine Lane, who escaped unharmed, has asked that floral tributes are not left near his home.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or the car’s movements prior to it leaving the road is asked to call police on 101 quoting incident number 218 of Sunday May 19.
