Retailers welcomed South Yorkshire crime commissioner Shaun Wright to their stores as part of a blitz on shoplifting.
Mr Wright visited two shops in Rotherham to speak to workers and hear how shoplifting has affected them.
He was joined by Coun Jahangir Akhtar, Rotherham Council deputy leader, for the visit to Co-op stores in Kimberworth and Kimberworth Park.
He spoke to risk manager Steven Sage about shoplifting incidents and heard about the help they are receiving from police.
Mr Sage said: “It is not just the cost of the items that matters to us – it’s the time it takes to deal with the incidents and the effect it can have on our employees, customers and the community.”
The stores have been given crime prevention advice by local officers to reduce shoplifting.
PC Andy Robinson said: “Stores have been offered advice about layout, staffing levels and training.”
