Police issue security warning after burglars target homes in Sheffield

Police officers are advising residents to check the locks on their doors after a number of burglaries.

In the early hours of this morning occupants of a house in Kildonan Grove, Birley, were woken up when their house alarm started sounding.

They discovered that their door lock had been damaged to gain entry.

A house in Stanage Rise, Frecheville, was also broken into after the keys were accidentally left in the outside lock of the front door.

South Yorkshire Police said a house in Church Lane, Woodhouse, had a door lock tampered with but the culprit failed to gain entry because of a door chain.

There were also attempted burglaries in Youlgreave Drive, Frecheville and Wheatley Grove, Handsworth.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Sadly the past 24 hours has seen a further rise in burglaries reported, so please do remain vigilant and report anything suspicious to us.

"Please ensure keys to your property are kept safe and away from reach of open windows and letterboxes.

"Please also ensure you check the standards of your home locks. Any reputable locksmiths will be able to recommend a good lock that meets current British Standards. Not only will this assist with making your home more resilient to attack it may also reduce your home insurance premiums."
