Police officers have issued a safety warning after two elderly women were mugged in a Sheffield suburb.

Officers have stepped up patrols in the Waterthorpe area following the incidents - one last Friday and the first on April 12.

In both incidents elderly women, aged 71 and 81, had their bags snatched as they walked from Crystal Peaks to the Beckton estate.

Police officers are carrying out high visibility and undercover patrols.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Foot patrols have been conducted on the footpaths in the Beckton area due to an elderly female having her bag snatched recently.

"Please be mindful if walking in this area alone."

Anyone with information should call South Yorkshire Police on 101.
