Chief Superintendent Stuart Barton of South Yorkshire Police said the shooting appeared at this stage to be an 'isolated incident'.

He said: “We are still looking for the offender and it is common to have an armed response for a time until we know exactly what has happened.

“We are also working with the family who have kindly offered a reward for information."

Mr Barton added that the injured man appears now to have been shot with a pellet gun and that his injury was not as serious as first thought.

He also thanked the public for the support they have given the investigation so far and added police would remain at the park for reassurance for some time.

Police were called to the park at around 6.30pm last night following reports that a man had been shot in the face.
