POLICE in South Yorkshire are reminding people to be on their guard against burglars and thieves, and not open their doors to strangers.
The advice has been issued at a time when Census collectors are calling at homes to visit residents who have not filled in their questionnaires.
Crime reduction officer Kate Robinson said: “There are a number of professional and trusted organisations currently working in neighbourhoods and their work involves visiting people’s homes.
“However, at times such as this, the potential for criminals to pretend to work for reputable companies to get access into homes is greater and can become a problem.”
The force said Census collectors will have ID and will not request bank details or ask for personal details other than names, addresses and date of birth.
