POLICE have been handing out purse chains to elderly women in the Peak District in a bid to deter thieves.

Officers from Hathersage Safer Neighbourhood Team have been giving out the free chains at local events, as well as giving out advice on how to prevent thefts.

PCSO Anthony Boswell said he also helped fit the purse chains and spoke to pensioners about how they work.

“The chains secure your purse to your handbag to help prevent would be thieves from stealing it,” said PCSO Boswell.

“They provide elderly people with that extra bit of reassurance when out doing their shopping.”
