Police dog welfare move

A POLICE dog welfare scheme has been set up in South Yorkshire to ensure they are kept in the best possible conditions.

It was introduced in the wake of the death of a police dog in Essex and, like other schemes set up by forces and authorities across the country, will ensure the care of police dogs is open to independent scrutiny.

The scheme, to demonstrate that police dog training methods are ethical, humane and transparent, will work in the same way as independent visits at South Yorkshire police custody suites which check the conditions prisoners are kept in.

Visitors will check the dogs have ready access to water, appear fit and healthy, are in a suitable, clean and safe environment and appear free from disease and injury.
