Police chiefs condemn attacks on police cars in Sheffield

Vandals threw a breeze block at the windscreen of one vehicle and bricks and bottles at another in Darnall on Tuesday night and last week vandals hurled a brick at a police car patrolling Nether Edge, Sheffield.

They struck at 5.45pm last Wednesday as the car was driving along Empire Road.

Inspector Chris Lewis, from the Sheffield East Local Policing Team, said: “This kind of behaviour is absolutely unacceptable - it potentially puts the lives of our officers at risk and the wider public as well.

“By damaging police vehicles they are removing valuable resources from the streets, where we are needed to prevent and detect crime within our local neighbourhoods.

“One man has been arrested on suspicion of a public order offence in connection with the incident in Darnall, but if anyone has information about those responsible for any of these incidents across Sheffield, please get in touch.”

Neil Bowles, chairman of the South Yorkshire branch of the Police Federation, said: "These attacks on police vehicles are a concerning turn of events.

"It is totally unacceptable for officers or our vehicles to be attacked - having vehicles off the road means less resources available to respond to incidents."
