Police chief hails crime crackdown in Barnsley a success

Police officers were briefed ahead of a day of action in Barnsley yesterday

Officers flooded the town yesterday as part of Operation Duxford, which is aimed at tackling issues of concern in local communities.

A number of fly tippers were caught, two dogs were seized under the Dangerous Dogs Act and 24 vehicles were stopped and searched.

District Commander, Chief Superintendent Scott Green, said: "I hope that seeing and speaking to officers yesterday has reassured people living in Barnsley that we are committed to tackling the issues that matter most to you.

"If you tell us there’s something happening in the area you live that’s of concern, we will listen and act upon it."

He added: "Hundreds of staff and officers, alongside colleagues from Barnsley Council, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and the Department of Work and Pensions, carried out enforcement activity, including eight search warrants, as well as extensive engagement opportunities as we spoke to residents and businesses about crime prevention and safety advice.

"Yesterday’s intelligence led activity was varied and I’m proud of what we were able to achieve and I’d like to thank staff and partner agencies for their efforts.

"I’d also like to thank every single person who stopped to speak to officers, who said hello and who wanted to find out more about Operation Duxford and the overall work we’re doing across the district.

"While Operation Duxford enables us to carry out a high-visibility day of action with the assistance of partners, it’s important to note that this work, tackling the issues most prevalent in our community, is ongoing every single day.

"Our priority is making Barnsley a safe and enjoyable place to live, work and visit."
