A group of campaigners against plans to fell trees across Sheffield have gathered on Marden Road, Nether Edge, this morning in a bid to stop the felling.

Amey workers, carrying out road and pavement upgrades across Sheffield, have a list of trees they plan to fell, including one on Marden Road today.

Protesters have gathered inside a barrier Amey workers have put up around the tree.

Helen McIlry, aged 57, said: "We are determined to take a stand.

"Amey arrived this morning but fortunately there were people here before them and gradually more have arrived.

"The tree they want to fell here is absolutely beautiful and one of about 4,.000 that have been felled so far, with thousands more planned.

"We have to take a stand against this as the majority are healthy and the only reason Amey wants to remove them is because of the effect they are having on some pavements and roads, but despite there being engineering solutions to this there is a lack of will."
