Police called out to World War Two shell find near Sheffield

A World War Two shell found in a field on the outskirts of Sheffield sparked a large police response.

Emergency services alongside specialist bomb squads, were called to an area off Hathersage Road in the Fox House area around 9.50pm on Thursday night.

A cordon was put up and roads were shut off as a precautionary measure.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Emergency services were called to the Fox House area at about 9.50pm last night, following the discovery of a suspected World War Two shell.

“Officers attended the scene and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team confirmed that it was a shell.

“It was deemed that there was no risk to the wider community, however a cordon was in place overnight until the EOD attended this morning to deal with the item.

“The shell has since been removed and the cordon has been lifted.”
