Police action nets 15 arrests

A CRACKDOWN on anti-social behaviour in part of Doncaster has led to 15 arrests and a drop in yobbishness, police claim.

Officers from the force’s Doncaster Tutor Unit launched Operation Activate to stop problems which had been reported in Wheatley and Intake. They were backed up by Wheatley Safer Neighbourhood Team.

The crackdown involved high visibility police patrols, and raids under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

Doncaster Council was also involved, with officers working on graffiti and rubbish in nearby Sandall Park which was highlighted as a problem by residents.

The team executed search warrants on properties under the Misuse of Drugs Act where quantities of drugs and stolen property were recovered and a number of arrests made.

The operation led to 15 arrests for criminal damage, theft, harassment and for failing to appear in court.

Pc Liam Wood said: “As a result of this operation the Wheatley area has already seen a rise in patrols and this is driving down anti-social behaviour in the area.

“People who have been wanted for various crimes and other matters have been arrested as a result of the increased patrols.”

Mayor of Doncaster Martin Winter, chairman of the multi-agency Safer Doncaster Partnership, has given his backing to the latest operation.

He said: "I am delighted Operation Activate has helped drive down anti-social behaviour in the Wheatley area.

“It also demonstrates to our residents that we won't tolerate any form of anti-social behaviour and, through working together to tackle incidents of graffiti, theft, drugs and nuisance neighbours, we are helping create safer neighbourhoods."
