Police act to allay fear over suspected ‘abduction’ of child

Have your say

POLICE investigating the alleged abduction of a three-year-old girl on a residential street in Worksop have acted to calm parents’ fears and stress no one has been reported missing.

A young girl told officers she saw a man put a girl in the back of a red vehicle outside the One Shop in Edinburgh Road on Saturday. He drove off, turning right on to Pelham Street.

Moments earlier the toddler had been with a woman, the young girl claimed.

Two 11-year-old girls had reported that a man tried to entice them into a red van on Pelham Street on Thursday.

Det Insp Dave Sinclair said: “The community is understandably concerned. There has been a considerable amount of speculation on social network sites.

“There was an incident on Pelham Street in Worksop on Thursday afternoon. An appeal was made to the public via the media, high visibility patrols and alerts through schools.

“These matters are being investigated, but I want to appeal to the community to rely upon the information provided by the police and not to become alarmed by inaccurate reports circulating on the internet. No one has come forward to police to report a missing child. There may be a completely innocent explanation.”
