Poet examines Mary's imprisonment

Poet Geraldine Monk will read work based on fragments of letters written by Mary Queen of Scots, at the first Sheffield Manor Lodge Open Weekend of 2016.

Based on the infamous ‘Scandal Letter’ of Mary Queen of Scots, the award-winning poet intertwines fragments from Mary’s letters and poems and gives them a modern twist. The result is a series of entertaining and often poignant imaginings of Mary’s interior life as she whiled away her fourteen years imprisonment in Sheffield Castle and Manor.

Visitors will also be able to explore the ruins on a guided tour, meet the infamous Bess of Hardwick and get lost in the lavender labyrinth.

Geraldine Monk has lived in Sheffield for over thirty years and has many volumes of poetry to her name. She is an affiliated poet to the Centre for Poetry & Poetics at The University of Sheffield.

She will be performing in the Turret House on Sunday February 21 at 2pm, reading from her Unsent Letter.

The Discovery Centre and grounds are open Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 4pm. Entry is free and guided tours are £3.
