South Yorkshire Police spokesman Mike Trees said the cyclist was reported to have turned right suddenly from one lane to another, directly in front of the van.

The cyclist, who is from Mexborough, was initially taken to Doncaster Royal Infirmary after the collision on Friday but he was transferred on Sunday to Sheffield’s Royal Hallamshire Hospital, where he was today described as stable and improving.

The van driver was not injured.

Any witnesses to the incident, at around 8.32pm on Friday, should call the South Yorkshire Police Accident Witness Line on 0114 220 2970.
