Plea for new blood donors

BLOOD donors are being urged to continue giving their pints during the Olympics, with fears that stocks could dry up if people fail to attend sessions because they are watching sport instead.

NHS Blood and Transplant is hosting two donor sessions at Eckington School, Dronfield Road, on Friday, August 31, from 12.30am to 3pm, and 4.30pm to 7.45pm.

Holly Mason, Lead Donor Relations Manager, said: “Blood has a limited shelf life of 35 days for red blood cells and just seven days for platelets.

“Because of this, it is vital that both existing and new blood donors come forward now, so we can ensure that vital supplies of blood are available.”
