CAMPAIGNERS who worked to protect Sheffield playing fields from a road scheme have been praised by local politicians.

Coun Ray Satur, who represents Woodhouse, said he and colleagues city councillor Mick Rooney, and Sheffield South East Labour MP Clive Betts, were ‘absolutely delighted’ that Woodhouse Mill playing fields have been granted protected status as part of the Queen Elizabeth II Fields In Trust initiative.

The scheme is part of celebrations to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Coun Satur said: “I want to thank all those who attended public meetings, signed petitions, wrote to The Star and the council, plus members of Orgreave Parish Council and Woodhouse, Handsworth and Woodhouse Mill and Orgreave Community Forums, for saving this site.”
